The Middle Eastern Refugee Advocacy Quilts from the Hope Workshop

I edited this video interviewing the women who quilted the squares made by refugees in Jordan.

This one was a bit of a challenge for me.  The Advocacy Project's Executive Director Iain Guest's voice makes a few appearances in the video, and the women do not always answer his questions in complete sentences.  The film student in me wanted to cut his voice out as much as possible, as in most traditional documentaries.  But Mr. Guest noted that AP is a grassroots effort, and even the embroidery and quilting squares were something of a grassroots effort, and he asked that I use as much of his voice as necessary.  In the end, I was happy with what I came up with.

AEPD Beneficiary: Pham Thi Do

This is the third in a series of videos that I edited about beneficiaries of The Advocacy Project's partner, the Association for the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities.

AEPD Beneficiary: Le Thanh Duc

This is the second in a series of videos that I edited about beneficiaries of The Advocacy Project's partner, the Association for the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities.

2016 AP Peace Fellow: Ai Hoang

In 2016, I accepted a position as Social Media Coordinator for The Advocacy Project.  When they learned about my (small) background in video editing, they jumped at the opportunity and handed over footage for several short videos!

Here is the first video that I completed for AP: what it meant to Peace Fellow Ai Hoang to return to Vietnam, her home country, in order to volunteer with the Association for the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities.

I will continue to upload my AP portfolio as it unfolds!

Kate's Nailing It Tutorials

For almost two years, I have been writing and running a blog that focuses on nail polish and nail art, amply called Kate's Nailing It.  I frequently complain about the quality of my equipment on the blog, but truth be told it is good enough.  (One of my professors used to tell us that state-of-the-art equipment is not necessary in order to get a good shot, just as said equipment can not make a poorly designed shot look good.)  I have a Canon Power Shot SX 120 IS for photos, a homemade soft box for my lighting, and a Samsung Galaxy S5 for video.  (The video below was filmed on my Canon, but its video quality is so poor that I have switched to using my phone for any and all video now.)

The blog is mostly focused on photos, but I have made a few brief videos detailing how I achieved a particular look.  Although they're short and simple, I still used Final Cut Pro to edit these together, so I decided to include them in this blog.  After all, an edit is an edit, no matter how simple!

Here is a link to my nail art channel on YouTube.  There aren't many other videos on it as of yet, but I have a few that I've been meaning to edit together for a while now!

The Brotherhood: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc

During my last semester of college, one of my classmates was taking an independent study course.  Her final project was this documentary on Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.  She sought me out to be her Director of Photography on the project.  I filmed the interviews and most of the B-roll footage, including the MLK Day march at MSU, a panel, and the dramatically lit step routine.
